The sauce itself is, in fact, vegetarian :-). Especially if you’re an adult convert to eating vegetarian, you may want this on your veggie burgers and the like. I, personally (being a life-long vegetarian), don’t care for the taste, since it pretty much has to have meaty associations in your mind for you to want it, as far as I can tell. Why did you re-invent it, then, you ask? Because my husband is a meat-eater upon occasion, and we had sausage left over from a party (many of the guests were also meat-eaters :D) and he wanted BBQ sauce to eat it with. Of course, not liking it myself and rarely having meat in the house, I didn’t have any on hand. So, we made some. And, since we were making some, we fixed the “way too much sugar” problem while we were at it.
So, here you go! If you are here for non-vegetarian reasons I’m sure you’ll find many uses for it. If you are a vegetarian, well, hey, I make it now…there’s always parties, right :-)? Plus maybe you like it! Anyway, here is the super easy recipe.
Natural Sugar BBQ Sauce
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup Brown Rice Syrup
- 1/2 tsp molasses
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 TBS Worcestershire sauce
- 3 1/2 tsp dry ground mustard
- 1 tsp smoked paprika (you can substitute normal paprika, but Sean says the smoked was REALLY GOOD)
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 dash (or to taste) Tabasco sauce
Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a blender or small food-processor (blender is better–this is very liquidy). Run until very well combined.
2. Use immediately or store in a jar (the flavor will soak into plastic). It’s pretty good right away, and (according to Sean) “slightly better after sitting for a day.” Either way, enjoy!
